He spent years painting plein air with artists like Leonard Long, John Wilson and Warrick Fuller, and his Marine Paintings are so admired that the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum named their new gallery “The John Downton Gallery”.

John will talk about his painting process from start to finish, giving insight into how to construct a painting from initial sketch to finished work.  He will discuss the elements that make a good painting and give tips on sketching.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn from one of our very own greats.

Bring your sketchbooks, notebook , pencils and pen as there will be plenty of information to get down.

Anne will provide the photo reference. A variety of watercolour techniques will be used such as wet in wet, dry brush stroking, maybe applying masking fluid. We will also have some theoretical input that is, ‘what do judges look for when assessing works of art’.  Students are encouraged to develop confidence in finding their own artistic expression. This workshop is more suited to intermediate or advanced students (although everyone is welcome).
