Keith Dewell’s creative journey began in his early 20s at Ajax Art, an old Sydney sign firm where he painted signs and pictorial displays for Festival Records, Hoyts and Independent City Cinemas. It was there he met Harry Spratt, a Julian Ashton Art School graduate who saw potential in Keith’s work and encouraged him to “learn to do it properly.” Keith took the advice and became a part-time student at Ashton’s, attending evenings, Saturdays and whenever he could. That first night sparked a 43-year association with the school — nearly as long as Julian Ashton himself. Before retiring four years ago, Keith spent 27 of those years teaching at this prestigious art school.

Today Keith embraces the challenge of painting realistically, finding it demanding yet thrilling when it comes together. Rather than specialising, he chose to develop skills across all drawing and painting mediums. He draws inspiration from life itself, the natural world, and excellence in the work of other artists. Now based in Berry, Keith runs Studio 34, a venue he established in 2019 to host artist get-togethers and share a lifetime of learning through teaching.

We are thrilled to have Keith as a member of our art society over the past 3 years, and very grateful to him for being on the committee and supporting the society in a multitude of ways.
